SIP/Harbour Island Connection
Twice each year Bahamians celebrate Junkanoo over the Christmas holidays. The parade begins in the wee hours of the morning on Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, and is held once again in a separate competition on New Years Day. This is the equivalent of the Super Bowl, NCAA National Championship and Rose Bowl Parade combined for all Bahamians where the competition among groups is often fierce, each vying to take home the top prize. The national parade is held in Nassau with community groups competing from all the family islands. Smaller, more intimate celebrations are held in the out island settlements like Harbour Island. What the local celebrations may lack in size they more than make up for with unbridled enthusiasm, artistic talent and hyper-energized dance.
